Berberine Hydrochloride | |
Latin Name | Coptis chinensis Franch. |
Product Introduction | Berberine (2,3-methylenedioxy-9,10-dimethoxy-protoberberine) is an alkaloid extracted from various plants used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used historically in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine (vicariously through herbs which contain it) as an anti-microbial, anti-protozoal, and anti-diarrheal agent. |
Physiological Functions |
1. Berberine is used to reduce insulin resistance and improve biomarkers of type II diabetes such as fasting glucose and glycated hemoglobin. It can activate an enzyme called Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) while inhibiting Protein-Tyrosine Phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), thus increasing insulin sensitivity. 2. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Chronic ingestion of Berberine appears to be associated with less inflammation in response to pro-inflammatory stimuli. 3. Anti-diarrheal, the effect may come vicariously through defense against enterotoxins or through lowering the intestinal motility and transit time. 4. Improve gut health. 5. Enhance the efficacy of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in neurons. |
