1  Effects of Eucommia Ulmoides Extract on Fattening Pigs' Growth Performance
Feed 300 Duroc-landrace-yorkshire swine with Eucommia Ulmoides Extract and Flavomycin (a commonly used antibiotic) additives in daily ration, for feeding experiment from weaning to 90kg state. The experiment is divided into three stages, the results indicate that there are no significant differences in ADG (the average daily gain), Feed/Gain ratio, and mortality between those pigs feed with 1500mg/kg Eucommia Ulmoides Extract additives and those feed with Flavomycin additives (P>0.05), but are significantly higher than those from blank control group.
Blood biochemical parameters show that in experimental pigs blood, the serum urea nitrogen content is lower than those in flavomycin group and control group, while serum globulins level is quite the same with those pigs of flavomycin group, and higher than those of control group. So it's clear that Eucommia Ulmoides Extract additives are beneficial for the absorption and utilization of nitrogenous compounds in daily ration, and can enhance animal immunity.
Tests after slaughter show that Eucommia Ulmoides Extract additives help to improve meat quality. With 1500mg/kg Eucommia Ulmoides Extract supplement in daily ration, experimental pigs' shoulder fat thickness is thinner than the flavomycin group's and control group's, and the difference reaches to a significant level (p<0.05). The slaughter rate, lean meat rate and hind leg muscle rate of fattening pigs are 1.83%, 2.74 and 2.79% respectively higher than those of flavomycin group, and 1.49%, 1.94 and 1.96% respectively higher than those of control group. The eye muscle area of fattening pigs is also higher than those of flavomycin group and control group, but after variance analysis, the difference has not reached to a significant level (p>0.05). Judging from appearance, fattening pigs feed with Eucommia Ulmoides Extract supplement have longer body and wider hips.

2  Eucommia extract's mould proof effect study
Add 0.15% pure Eucommia powder (as active ingredient 8g) to feed, it can effectively prevent the feed mildewing. The mold multiply in feed, which kept for 45~60days in the condition: between July and September, at room temperature 27-38°(average 31.5°), relative humidity 50-84%.Without preservatives feed, the total mold is 5.0 × 10⁵cfu/g. added pure Eucommia powder feed, the total mold is 1.7 x 10⁵cfu/g. But the feed with Luprosil Salt (main calcium propionate) and Confeed (composite mold inhibitor), the total mold is 2.3×10⁵cfu/g and 2.8 × 10⁵cfu/g. The result indicate that feed with pure Eucommia powder, its total mold is significantly lower than the other three groups (P <0.01), the inhibition rate of mold by pure Eucommia powder is 78.2%.

1. General toxicological test
Acute toxicity test
Do acute toxicity test on Kunming mice, which are provided by Hunan Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry. With high concentration solution of pure Eucommia powder to irrigation stomach, determinate its LD50. The result turn out that there is no death and could not determinate LD50. The oral maximum tolerated dose (MTD) is greater than 27788.0mg/kg, weight (1.54-1.74 times mouse body weight) LD50 of intraperitoneal injection is 2610.0mg/kg. It indicates that the pure Eucommia powder is very low toxicity.

The chronic toxicity tests of Eucommia bark extract (pure powder)
According to the maximum tolerance dose of acute toxicity test, use 6.17, 2.06, 0.69g/kg Eucommia bark extract on mouse respectively, take for 8-week, results showed that it has no effects on mouse and its Blood conventional index; and there is no significant difference on normal blood with the control group (P > 0.05), but Eucommia bark extract has certain inhibition of growth on mouse if it takes high dose, the content of total protein, albumin, urea nitrogen in the blood was significantly higher than other groups, however, low doses of eucommia bark extract on the growth of the middle mouse has a significant role in promoting, the activity  of GOT, GPT and ALP in the blood will decline with the increase of the dose, and there has very significant difference with blank control group(P < 0.01). So, eucommia bark extract  can reduce the blood of the active, improves the digestive system function.  Low doses of eucommia bark extract can reduce the content of urea nitrogen in the blood, improve the efficiency of nitrogen absorb, and no adverse effects to other organs.
